In a last fling of 2014 I decided to start a big model project. Due to my MSc course I've been unable to do much in terms of papercrafting for most of the year so it's about time I got back into things. :eager:

When I made the TF2 Pyro I said it was a one-off. At the time I wasn't interested in doing any more classes but alluded to some potential for the Soldier or Engineer. After thinking how much the Pyro was a joy to build and work with I've come back ~2 years later to revisit the game's models. Of course by then I'd completely forgotten how to extract 3D model content from Source games so spent 3 hours trying to wade through snobby forum posts and semi-functional conversion tools. :nuu:

But like his flamethrower wielding friend, the Soldier was minimal trouble to edit. Less so since the rocket launcher isn't a mess of pipes like the flamer was! Also I came across fan made hi-res textures for the character model itself as the originals are quite blurry.

Admittedly the pose is not great. It's one of my weaker areas in terms of design. But I'm not fond of his default super hunched stance in game. Tightly bent limbs never translate well to paper. His other hand can hold a rocket or shovel. The face is 85% derived from a lower level-of-detail mesh which saved a lot of time. Eyes ended up kind of square...but you never really see his eyes normally. :shh:

29th November: Airsoft and visitors so no chance today.

30th November: All about the upper body

1st December: Not much, just some elbow.

2nd December: Finished both arms. Rocking a major Baldur's Gate addiction so getting a bit distracted.

4th December: Slowed down a bit now. 1 hand per day.

6th December: Working on the head and all boring misc. bits. Floppy helmet brim. Replaced later with a 200gsm folded version.

9th December: Slowly been chipping away at the rocket launcher. Everything glued in place though the neck join is a bit iffy. Now all done except the shovel.

10th December: Finished the shovel, so will gradually work on part numbering, instructions and main photos!
